Central Bank of Bahamas announces National Digital Currency by 2020

Central bank of Bahamas is set to enter into a partnership with transaction provider NZIA.io to build and implement “Project Sand Dollar’, the fiat digital currency. Singapore based software development firm Zynesis is also part of the project.

The Bank stated that the “Project Sand Dollar” initiative will be an “integrated and affordable electronic payment system for all companies and residents.”

The project will comply with local financial regulations and aims to provide equitable access to electronic payments for the residents of the country.

Voltron built on Corda blockchain successfully completes trials

The Voltron initiative, built on R3’s Corda blockchain platform, has completed global trials which saw over 50 banks and corporates participate in the simulation of multiple digital Letter of Credit transactions across 27 countries on six continents.

The trial was conducted by a partnership of three entities viz., Bain, CryptoBLK and R3 on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform.

Voltron utilizes blockchain technology to create time efficiency by reducing the time it takes to execute the entire process of traditional paper-based Letter of Credit from 5-10 days to under 24 hours.

US SEC and Canada’s OSC takes action against NextBlock Global and Its CEO

Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) has approved a settlement agreement between NextBlock Global Limited, its CEO Alex Tapscott & the Commission. Tapscott has admitted to misleading investors in slide decks.

NextBlock agreed to pay an administrative penalty of $700,000 CAD and $100,000 CAD towards the costs of investigation by staff of OSC. Tapscott was directed to pay an administrative penalty of $300,000 CAD, to perform community service by delivering lectures about ethics to students at 3 business schools, and to publish an open letter about the consequences of his misconduct in a National Daily.

US SEC has also settled charges against NextBlock and Tapscott in relation to raising of USD 2.4 M from American investors. NextBlock and Tapscott agreed to a cease-and-desist order, and Tapscott agreed to pay a USD 25,000 as penalty.
